The Grumpy Old Gamer… and Friends!

cnk

In the world of podcasts, if you throw a rock, you’ll hit a ton of people who have one. I myself like a myriad of genres: horror, true crime, human interest, and gaming. In the gaming realm, there are plenty, but some of them are simply shills for the industry, for every IGN, there are plenty of Nintendo affiliates, Sony fanboys, and Microsoft employees. Where is the fairness? Where is the impartiality? If I am interested in a game, I want an unbiased, “regular guy” opinion. Is it good? Does it suck? Do I like the same type of games you do?

Enter the crew of Controllers and Keyboards. A group of friends that gets together and discusses the very subject so near and dear to our hearts. At the same time, they have fun and invite their fans and listeners to take part. I myself have been a guest on the podcast a couple of times and had a blast. I happily contribute each week with custom intros and the occasional opening skit.

But enough from me, let’s get to meet the crew in their own words. I asked each member to answer a few questions about their beginning as a gamer, and as a podcaster. It really helped to add a personality to the voices and names.

Dani “Lazy Turtle” Long (Gamer girl, mom, book aficionado, wife of the boss)

When/what was your start as a gamer?

The NES and SNES that my grandmother had. I am pretty sure she only had any collection of games at all for the sake of us grandkids and I don’t think I could ever thank her enough.

Favorite system of all time? Why?

Probably the same because of all the memories made but I would also have the put the PS2 as a contender for favorite. Playing on the PS2 introduced me to a much wider variety of games and I still look back on that era of gaming with fondness.

Favorite aspect of gaming (Music, art style, atmosphere)? Why?

I’m here for the stories and the fun!

Hands down, favorite game of all time (pick one)? Why?

This tends to shift on me whenever I play or replay an awesome game. Most often, it tends to be a Legend of Zelda game. As we recently did an episode covering BioShock though, that one (the first one) is currently topping my list.

What started you as a podcaster?

Actually, books! Storyteller and I started a book podcast (Book Geeks Uncompromised) and then KingClong decided to start the gaming one and told us we were joining in.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Somewhere there is lots of games and books. Hopefully continuing on what we are doing now and continuing to be involved in the gaming community.

Where do you see the gaming culture in 10 years?

I don’t see the culture so much changing, I think that people will still be people so there will be trolls and there will be positive people doing the same things they are doing today just maybe on different platforms. I think there will be a big shift to digital purchasing and if stores like GameStop can’t keep up with that, I do mourn the passing of a place to go to browse games in person.

If you could be any video game character, who and why?

Tifa because maybe if I was a character from an FF7 game my husband would love me as much as he does his dog.

What’s your favorite gaming genre? Why?

I know this is really broad but RPGs in general because, again, I’m here for the stories and those tend to be more rich in story than other genres.

If you could change 1 game, which one and why?

I would change Persona 5 so it is not a billion hours long.

Charles “The Goat” Dodson (BFF of the boss, chewer of pens, PC master race for life member)

When/what was your start as a gamer?

When I was around 2 years old my older cousin was living with us, my parents bought him, not me, a Nintendo entertainment system, at two years old I would watch him play those classic games, Mario Bros, Batman, City Connection, Spy Hunter, Excite Bike etc… and I fell in love at first sight, about a year and a half later he went back home with his family and he left me the NES, and the rest as they say is history.

Favorite system of all time? Why?

PC, the versatility of control options, continuously upgradable no generations, mod support, free online play, most games even exclusives at launch typically come to PC, I don’t really consider myself a graphics whore or anything like that, I’m not constantly checking framerates, I just like the way a mouse and keyboard handles, and if I need a controller I have to ability to use one as well.

Favorite aspect of gaming (Music, art style, atmosphere)? Why?

I would have to say atmosphere, and story telling, the gameplay can be great, the game can look great, but if the story doesn’t suck me in I’m out, that was my biggest gripe with the Star Wars Battlefront relaunch, I didn’t buy it until it was on sale because I knew it wasn’t going to have a single player or co-op story mode, great game, really fun shooter, but the lack of engagement from me came from the lack of any kind of story, also if a games atmosphere sucks the game invariably sucks nuff said on that one.

Hands down, favorite game of all time (pick one)? Why?

Probably not what most people would answer but the Rocksteady Batman Arkham trilogy, I have beaten those 3 games probably a total of 10-12 times total, it’s like my childhood and adult hood teamed up to make the perfect game for me, Kevin Conroy is THE Batman, and Mark Hamil is THE Joker, the freeflow combat system gets flack from some people “cough” jordan “cough” and yet they will turn around and praise the almost identical two button mashing system in Shadow of Mordor, the combined story of those games would make arguably one of the best batman comics ever written in my opinion, I just honestly can’t say enough good about that series.

What started you as a podcaster?

I was moving back to the city where storyteller, king clong, and lazy turtle live, king clong and I used to be roommates many moons ago, so I figured I would hit him up and I noticed that he was posting about a podcast he had started I listened to one of the episodes and it was damn entertaining, I instantly wanted in, messaged Clong, told him I wanted in he said sure, and now I’m in your ears every week, it would be great if we got enough listeners to start seeking sponsors and advertisers to begin to make money, but ultimately if I can make a few people laugh every week with my shenanigans I think I could be happy doing this the rest of my life.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully podcasting for a living with the same people I do it with now, I might give them quite a bit of hell sometimes, but I couldn’t ask for better partners, everyone on the crew brings their own unique viewpoint to the table and we’re not afraid to disagree with each other, frequently.

Where do you see the gaming culture in 10 years?

E sports will blow up, there will be and maybe already are colleges offering degrees in gaming, possibly even collegiate gaming leagues like the NCAA, it’s definitely a money spinner so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit.

If you could be any video game character, who and why?

Batman, always be yourself unless you can be Batman, then be Batman.

What’s your favorite gaming genre? Why?

Any type of action rpg, whether it be open world, side scroll, top down, whatever if it’s got a good story, and fun gameplay I’m in.

If you could change 1 game, which one and why?

Mass Effect 3, the ending was such a let down compared to the great story that spanned the three games, it felt like no matter what you do you were just screwed

Greg “Storyteller” Larance (Youngest member, brother of Dani, good natured bullseye)

When/what was your start as a gamer?

I played pokemon when I was little and a couple of other old games, but my first real love was Halo Combat evolved.

Favorite system of all time? Why?

Ps2. There are just so many games from my childhood that I loved and most were on the Ps2. Xbox 360 is close but games like Sly Cooper and kingdom hearts will always be close to my heart.

Favorite aspect of gaming (Music, art style, atmosphere)? Why?

Story. If a game has a boring story then count me out. Even games not focused on the story like Overwatch get me excited because I love the backstory.

Hands down, favorite game of all time (pick one)? Why?

Got to go with Pokemon Red. I don’t know how many times I have completed that game. It is everything Nostaglia for me and I could play it over and over again.

What started you as a podcaster?

Me and Dani (aka Lazy Turtle) started a book podcast and Jordan was bored on those night we recorded so he started this podcast. Don’t get me wrong, I was super for it when he suggested it. If you can’t tell I love talking, and podcasting is a good excuse to talk.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Not really sure. I have always had a thought of making film, wether for big time movie studios or a small indie company. Either way I hope we are still going strong with our podcast.

If you could be any video game character, who and why?Sora from Kingdom hearts. He is just so carefree and passionate about his friends that he would do anything for them. I wish I had his courage.

What’s your favorite gaming genre? Why?

Any kind of adventure game. If there is a good story and a large world to explore then count me in.

If you could change 1 game, which one and why?

Assassins creed 3. There are so many thi ngs I would change about this broken game. For one thing, make the main character less whiny.

Jordan “King Clong” Long (Leader of the pack, brains of the outfit)

  1. When/what was your start as a gamer? First games I ever played was on the Atari 2600 and the NES, But I didn’t really get sucked into it until the SNES and Super Mario world. That Game really opened my eyes up to what video games could do.
  2. Favorite system of all time? Why? Thats a really tough one the SNES and N64 as well as PS1 all have such a special place in my history and so many great memories. But with a gun to me head I would choose PC. I have had more fun with friends on PC than any other system thanks to LAN parties and stuff.
  3. Favorite aspect of gaming (Music, art style, atmosphere)? Why? I love an amazing story, but to make an amazing story you must have great music, style and atmosphere.
  4. Hands down, favorite game of all time (pick one)? Why?Final Fantasy 7. Why? How about why not! it has my favorite story, game play style, music, everything about it just amazes me to this day even. I replay the game at least once if not more a year. I have already played it twice this year and may do it a third.
  5. What started you as a podcaster? I had friends with a podcast, as well as Turtle and Story teller had just started their book one. So I thought to my self what better way to get an excuse to play and talk more games than do a podcast.
  6. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? With any luck running not just a successful gaming podcast but part of a really badd ass gaming community that we hope to build.
  7. Where do you see the gaming culture in 10 years? Hopefully with any luck with a lot less toxicity. I also see E-sports being even more main stream and common place.
  8. If you could be any video game character, who and why? I would probably be Mario. Mario get to do it all. His games have him doing all kinda of adventures and activities. Also a lot of characters and brooding and dark. Mario is light, funny and just plain fun.
  9. What’s your favorite gaming genre? Why? Old school Turn based combat JRPG. Love the game play and the stories. The games had to have good story. I also really enjoy the tactics in the combat style.
  1. If you could change 1 game, which one and why? Im not sure I would change any game. While there are a lot of game I dont enjoy, some out there does. It may just not be for me. Now this is all a moot point if the FF7 remakes come out in episodes or is really bad and butchered. Then I change that to be good!
